Australian Open 2009:Federer Nadal set to rock

After much hype surrounding Murray and a few others, its the top two guns in the world tennis who will fight it out for the crown of the Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific. Federer who did not start off well has managed to reach his peak for the closing stages of the tournament. You must ask Juan Martin Del Potro on Federer's form, the Swiss master just destroyed him in a horribly one sided last 8 match. Federer was playing some unbelievable tennis and he even volleyed a ball with his head after Potro was lying on one side of the court. And against Roddick in the semis, Royal Roger turned up once again and he outclassed the American. Nadal, on the other hand had been blowing away all his opponents and was not tested till the semis where the epic semifnals against country man Verdasco which lasted nearly 6 hours ended with Verdasco double faulting. He too is in top shape and all eyes are on the finals. So will Federer avenge his French open and Wimbledon losses to Nadal last year???? wellll......I wish he does so. Can't wait to see Federer winning his 14th Slam. Come on Roger......

First ODI:India beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets

India won the first match of the 5 match ODI series with a comfortable six wicket victory. Before the match India had a big setback when Sehwag injured himself in the training and Rohit Sharma came in place of him. Sri Lanka went with the unchanged line up that beat Pakistan. Winning the toss, Dhoni opted to field. India got off to a dream start when in-form Dilshan was run out without score on the board. But Jayasuriya teed off from there and reached his 28th ODI hundred and in the process completed 13000 ODI runs and also became the oldest man to score an ODI hundred. When it looked like the home team might get a huge score, India kept taking wickets and restricted the Lankans to 246. When India batted, Sachin was on the wrong side of an umpiring error from debutant umpire Dharmasena but Gambhir and Raina took charge scoring freely, Mendis was negotiated with ease. As Raina & Gambhir fell, Dhoni took control and India took the batting powerplay in 43rd over and reached the target with 11 balls to spare. Sanath Jayasuriya was Man of the Match.

Brief Scores:
India 247 for 4 (Gambhir 62, Raina 54, Dhoni 61*) beat Sri Lanka 246 for 6 (Jayasuriya 107, Ishant 3-51) by six wickets

KFC Big Bash Finals:New South Wales beat Victoria

What a match for a T20 finals. The finals of the KFC Big Bash between defending champs Victoria 'Bushrangers' and New South Wales 'Blues' went till the last ball and in the end it was the Blues who took home the trophy in a nerve racking thriller and ended Victoria's stronghold over the trophy. Victoria, batting first made 166 for 4 thanks to some clean hitting by Rob Quiney who hit a 91 from 56 balls including 8 sixes. Bird took 3 wickets for the Blues. And in reply the Blues appeared to be cruising at 85 for 1 but they lost 3 wickets for 7 runs and made things complex for themselves but then came Ben Rohrer. His brutal innings of 44 came off 20 balls as he took them nearer to the target. And with a single needed off the last ball, Rohrer scampered for a bye and the bowlers throw hit the stumps. But the Blues were celebrating while the third umpire was called for. And replays showed Rohrer's bat in the air while the bails were removed but his dive meant that his hands were inside the crease!!!!!! After a few anxious moments Blues erupted again. Both these teams will take part in the Champions League t20 coming October.

Australian Open 2009:Big Four on the charge

The field for the first slam of the year, Australian Open is very open. Any player in the "Big Four" of tennis can end up with the title. But the outsiders like Tsonga and Roddick can also prove a tough but to crack. Murray was labelled as the pre-tournament favourite by many but the defending champ, Djokovic did not agree with that saying one among the top 3 will win it. Federer, whose form has been poor by his standards started very ordinarily by but his stunning straight set win over Safin in the 3rd round seem to have brought the swiss great back to his best. Nadal has been merciless in the first two rounds, dipatching his opponents with his utmost ease. Murray has been having a comfortable couple of rounds while Djokovic had to dig deep to get into the 4th round match. With all four hitting form his could turn out into a great opening Grand Slam. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Federer to get his 14th slam.

Football:EPL Transfer news

The January transfer window in the English Premier League has seen a lot of activity over the month and with the deadline set to end soon, lots of swapping and changing are happening across England. Manchester City have added Craig Bellamy,Wayne Bridge and Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong. Still the Eastland outfit are chasing Roque Santa Cruz despite Blackburn's refusal. Chelsea have not been very active in this transfer window as Scolari was clearly told that he needs to sell players before he buys any. Liverpool have let Jermaine Pennant go to Portsmouth while Pompey parted company with Jermain Defoe, who left for Tottenham. Spurs have also signed midfielder Wilson Palacios from Wigan. Marlon King, who joined Hull City on a season's loan from Wigan has joined Middlesbrough for the rest of the season after a bust up with Hull manager Phil Brown. Boro meanwhile have sent striker Mido on loan to Hull City till end of the season. Hull City have signed Jimmy Bullard from Fulham for a club record fee of £5million. Aston Villa have confirmed they are holding talks with Emile Heskey after agreeing a £3.5million fee with Wigan Athletic. Arsenal are continuing their pursuit of Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin but Zenit's huge asking price prevents the deal from goign through.More drama awaits us in the last few days.....

Indian football:Chetri on trial at Coventry

Sunil Chetri, has been the star name to emerge from Indian football after Bhaichung Bhutia. He was tipped to make it big when he first came has made his first big stride. Sunil Chetri is all set to become the third Indian player to head to Europe after having being called by Coventry City for trials. This news was earlier confirmed by his father Mr.Kharga Chetri. After Mohammed Salim played for Celtic in 1937 and Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia donned the colours of Bury FC, the Delhi lad will be the third Indian following in their footsteps if he manages to impress in the trials. These are great times for Indian Football with players set to play in the MLS and if Chetri successfully completes his trial it will mark a great beginning for Indian football this year. And with the national team improving all time under Bob Houghton we can look forward to a positive year. Hoping for the day when an Indian plays in the English Premier League.

IPL:England players set to play

All the roadblocks for the English players participating in the second edition of the IPL have been removed with The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) agreeing to allow England players to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a three-week period. Ealier it was said that KP and Flintoff would be available for 2 weeks only, which made the franchises think about buying but after this finals resolution we can see a host of English players including Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Kevin Pietersen and few more in the IPL. And the players have struck a deal with the counties and it means they will give 10% of whatever they get from the auction. But once they are put on auction, there is no doubt that they will attract high bids and its been rumoured that KP is in talks with the Bangalore team while Chennai are in dialogues with Flintoff. Lets wait and watch as all of them will come under the hammer and have no say in deciding they play!!!!

Cricket:IPL transfer news

The transfer market of the IPL has hardly seen any activity yet it saw the second transfer, which was a direct swap between Zaheer Khan(Bangalore) and Robin Uthappa (Mumbai). and similar to the ealier swap, this deal did not involve any cash dealings. After this swap, both the players will be appearing for their respective state teams. Vijay Mallya, during the IPL last year had said he would have been more happier had to got Uthappa also in the auction and now he has had his wish. Along with Uthappa, Bangalore have also signed Leicestershire all-rounder Dillon du Preez. It must be remembered that Delhi have signed up Australian dasher David Warner even before he made his smashing debut in the international arena.

Transfers:Kaka wants Real Madrid, saga rolls on

Ricardo Kaka, after ditching the lucrative multimillion dollar offer from Manchester City has reportedly told he will leave Milan only for Real Madrid. This was a news which was earlier confirmed by David Beckham, who is on loan at AC Milan. Becks revealed Kaka had been asking him about "The Whites". Roman Calderon, the former Real Madrid president had promised to sign Kaka during his election campaign but he just could not do that. But now the situation is different with Kaka ready to leave Milan, something which was evident from the Manchester City saga. But he finally made up his mind to remain at Milan, a sensible decision considering the fact that he wants trophies over money. With Real Madrid presidential elections nearing, the former President Florentino Perez is planning to have Kaka on his agenda for election campaign. Considering his knack of landing superstars like Zidane,Figo & Beckham, Perez might land Kaka for around €80 million in June. Fingers crossed.........

Cricket:IPL Transfers

The first ever trading window of IPL is set to end on January 22nd but there has not been much activity among the teams. Players like Afridi and Akhtar were put on sale but there were no buyers for them given the current situation between India and Pakistan. Some of the teams like the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were happy with their current squad and they did not put any player on the market. The first and the only transfer till this second was the straight swap between Nehra (Mumbai Indians) and Shikhar Dhawan (Delhi Daredevils). Now there are serious talks that Zaheer(Bangalore) and Robin Uthappa (Mumbai) are set for a similar swap without any cash dealings. Apart from this one there hasn't been any news (not even rumours) regarding the transfers and the teams have started to release fringe players to cut the costs!!!!! Next trading season migh see a bit of activity as teams are not sure of whom they require now. Now, I'm waiting for the player auction in February. If you are checking this post after January 20th, click here for the transfers before the window closed - IPL TRANSFERS.

EPL:Liverpool draw with Everton, Manutd remain top

Liverpool missed the chance to go back to the top of the table after they could manage only a 1-1 draw against bitter rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Liverpool started with Torres and Keane upfront, an attack minded line up with Alonso and Gerrard in the midfield. Everton played a 5 man midfield without the suspended Feliani. Gerrard opened the scoring in the 68th minute with a thunderbolt from 20 yards but Cahill broke their hearts as he rose to head home an Arteta free kick in the 87th minute and equalise. Liverpool, who have played a game more than Manchester United might live to regret the lost points as "The Champions" are firmly in control of the title race now and it wont be easy to catch them.

EPL Transfers:Bellamy moves to Manchester City

Manchester City added another player to their ever growing squad when they signed West Ham striker Craig Bellamy for a fee which is reportedly around £14 million. Even as City continue their chasing of Kaka, Mark Hughes has finally managed to get one of the strikers he wished for. West Ham, who are struggling for funds will some money on them after Bellamy's sale but Zola will regret the loss of his star player who was shaping up really well. We can expect more arrivals at the Eastlands before Jan 31st mid night.

IPL:Asif quits Delhi Daredevils

Mohammad Asif has been released from his IPL contract by the Delhi Daredevils after 48 hours of meetings between the player and the franchise. Asif is enduring some tough moments of his life after he was banned by IPL for using some banned substances. His bad times continued as he was detained for possession of Opium in Dubai Airport. And above all he was banned by PCB, pending the hearing of the IPL tribunal. Delhi bought Asif for US$650,000 on a three-year contract, making him the second-most expensive Pakistan player in the league. With his hearing set for January 24th, Asif's pull out comes as a surprise to many. He has said he wants to concentrate on winning back his place in the Pakistan national squad and he had quit due to personal reasons, which is understandable. Hope he comes back a better person.
